![]() Exoskeleton What is it? Exoskeleton means skeleton on the outside. Invertebrates (animals without backbones) such as molluscs and arthropods have a hard "skeleton" on the outside that supports their soft internal organs. Animals such as mammals and other vertebrates (animals with backbones) have an internal skeleton, or endoskeleton. Give me an example! The exoskeleton is like the armor worn by knights. It provides protection from both predators and the environment. The disadvantage of an exoskeleton is that it does not grow with the organism. As the animal grows, it must get rid of its exoskeleton and grow a bigger one from time to time. During these times the animal is without protection and can be easily eaten by predators.
