![]() Phylum What is it? A phylum is a unit use to group animals or plants together with others that share certain characteristics. Give me an example! Plants and animals are separated into two major kingdoms (Plant Kingdom and Animal Kingdom) for classification purposes. The next level of classification is phylum. For example, spiders and crabs are both members of the same phylum (they are both arthropods). These two animals both have an exoskeleton made of similar material and they both have jointed legs.
