![]() Friction What is it? Friction is a force that appears whenever one surface rubs against another, or when an object moves through water, air, or any other liquid or gas. Friction happens when two surfaces in close contact "grip" each other. The harder they press together, the stronger they grip. Friction is caused by differences in the forces that hold together the molecules of both surfaces. Give me an example! Here's a quick experiment you can try. Put a flat rubber eraser on a table top and try to push it across the table. What makes it "stick" to the table? Now try pushing a smooth pencil across the table. It doesn't seem to "stick". That's because the smooth surface of the pencil has less friction with the table top than the eraser does. Copyright ©2010, PCS Edventures, Inc. All Rights Reserved. |
