![]() Internet Service Provider What is it? An Internet Service Provider is a company that puts together a big computer called a server and a whole lot of telephone lines and modems to sell people access to the World Wide Web. Give me an example! Your Internet Service Provider (or ISP) is your connection to the Internet. Your browser works with their server and the telephone lines to let you explore the wonderful world of cyberspace! And in return, they charge you money every month. Sounds fair! Every server operated by an ISP has a domain name -- think of this as your computer's telephone "area code." And every user like you also has a login name -- think of this as your computer's very own telephone number. Together these two things make up your electronic mail address, separated in the middle by the @ symbol (a dead giveaway that something is an email address!). Copyright ©2010, PCS Edventures, Inc.
