![]() File Transfer Protocol What is it? File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is one of the formats of Internet protocols that allow you to download files from FTP sites on the World Wide Web. Give me an example! FTP is one of the oldest types of protocol, originally developed as a download site for software. FTP sites often have useful information you can download for free -- such as software and games. There are two kinds of FTP sites: Anonymous sites which allow any user to download, and non-anonymous sites which will ask you for a password in order to login. You can tell what's available on an FTP site by checking the index file, which is usually named something like index.txt, uploads.txt, or contents.txt. Here you'll find information on each file on the site, including their function and size. That's important if you plan to download -- you should look before you leap to make sure you have enough space to accommodate the file! Copyright ©2010, PCS Edventures, Inc. All Rights Reserved. |
