![]() Effort Distance What is it? The distance between the fulcrum and the effort in a lever system is the effort distance. Give me an example! Suppose you found yourself opposite a hippopotamus on a seesaw. In order to lift the hippo, you would need to increase the effort distance -- the distance between you and the fulcrum. This would give you a mechanical advantage in applying force to the seesaw (or lever). Archimedes (an ancient Greek physicist) once said that if he could find a lever long enough and a place to put the fulcrum, he could move the world.
