 Materials Science Engineer What is it? Materials science engineers work with molecular stuctures of materials, to improve performance and to invent new materials and products. This group of engineers test and make materials stronger, lighter, more durable, capable of withstanding high temperatures or low temperatures, and resistant to corrosion, stresses, and breakage. Give me an example! The replacement of steel with composite materials in automobiles is an example of the work of materials science engineers. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, materials science engineers' median annual earnings were $59,100 in the year 2000.
