![]() Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge What is it? The Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge is a type of bascule bridge. Bascule bridges are an example of a first class lever. Give me an example! This form of bascule bridge was designed by William Scherzer of Chicago, and was popular around the turn of the last century. The end of the bridge roadway is balanced on large steel rollers or rockers with a counterweight. Very little power is required to raise or lower the bridge because of the rolling action, which reduced friction. The Scherzer Rolling Lift bridge was often used as a railroad bridge.
