![]() Dimensional Analysis What is it? Dimensional analysis is simply a systematic (or well organized) way of solving problems involving numbers. Every number in a problem has certain units of measurement associated with it - such as grams, centimeters, litres, or degrees Celsius. If you know what kind of units you want your answer to be in (such as a certain number of meters), you can manipulate the units in the rest of the problem so they cancel each other out and you end up with an answer that's expressed in the correct kind of units (in this case, meters). Give me an example! Here's what we mean by "canceling out" units. Say you have a number that is a velocity expressed in meters per second. If you multiply that by another number expressed in units of seconds, the two "seconds" cancel each other out and your answer will be in meters. You can also use division to cancel units. Say you had a mass number (in grams) and you wanted your answer in terms of volume (litres). You could divide the number of grams by a density (grams/litre) and the two grams would cancel each other out, leaving you with an answer in terms of litres. Copyright ©2010, PCS Edventures, Inc.
