![]() Narthex What is it? The narthex of a Christian church is an enclosed porch or vestibule inside the entrance. Give me an example! The narthex was first used in the floor plan of the early cathedral and basilica type churches. Modern churches also have a narthex, but it is usually an informal meeting area inside the front doors where people exchange greetings and bulletin boards tell of current events in the life of the church.
